In an article published on Phys.org, an Armenian studies scholar describes the tradition of "karasunk" ("the forty"), which among Armenians is linked both to the birth of a baby and to death. The author writes that this year she gave birth to her fourth child, and she and the newborn entered the traditional forty-day period. During those days the mother and child stay at home, protected from the outside world. At the same time, a close friend from her childhood died, and the author noticed that the same word also denotes the first forty days after a death. According to the article, the significance of the number 40 is tied to Christian sacred time, as well as to older beliefs that regarded a person passing from one stage to another as vulnerable. For that reason, karasunk is not simply a period of rest but one of protection.
