Formula 1 has announced that Rwanda will host a round of the championship, to be called the African Grand Prix. A 10-year agreement has been signed between the parties. Since there is not yet a suitable track, one will be built in Bugesera, southeast of Kigali, and according to the plan it will be ready at the beginning of the next decade. The last Formula 1 race in Africa was the 1993 South African Grand Prix, meaning the continent has been absent from the racing calendar for almost 40 years. Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali noted that with this decision the sport will race on every inhabited continent. Lewis Hamilton has campaigned for years in favor of holding a race in Africa. At the same time, human rights advocates criticize Rwanda's selection, viewing it as an attempt to improve its image through sport.
