According to new data from the Instituto Cervantes, the number of people in China who want to learn Spanish is growing very quickly. From 2023 to 2025, enrollment in philology programs, elective subjects and Spanish as a foreign language courses rose by 12.6 percent. Spanish is now offered in 31 cities in China, and up to 98 percent of the country's universities teach a Spanish philology program. The potential number of Spanish speakers in China is approaching 98,000: more than 18,000 native speakers and about 66,000 students of the language. However, alongside the growth there is a shortage of teachers. At the presentation of the yearbook "Spanish in the World 2026" in Beijing, the institute's director Luis García Montero said that priority is given to teacher training, because more teachers are needed.
