World champion hurdler Thomas van Tonder of South Africa has completed the first crossing of its kind in the world under the Bloukrans Bridge. He covered more than 280 metres of the bridge's arch, moving along 600 suspended bars. The Red Bull Bridge Bars challenge ended in 47 minutes and 37 seconds, hanging beneath a bridge 216 metres high. He started at 10:21 with a heart rate of 150 beats per minute and immediately met the steepest section, a 45-degree incline, where he had to climb while facing backwards. According to Euronews, the protective tape on his hands wore away, but he focused on one bar at a time and crossed all 600. Van Tonder called this goal "one of the biggest dreams and missions" of his last two years.
