Nanotyrannus skeleton "Jodie" sold in New York for €42.6 million
A rare skeleton of a nanotyrannus, a small relative of Tyrannosaurus rex, has been sold at auction in New York for a record price of 42.6 million euros. An anonymous buyer acquired the skeleton, nicknamed "Jodie", online and by phone after 12 minutes of bidding. Sotheby's had expected 4 to 7 million euros. The auction house said this is the second most expensive dinosaur ever sold in the world. The nanotyrannus was about half the length of an adult tyrannosaur, and both lived in the Cretaceous period, around 67 million years ago. The "Jodie" skeleton is 2.9 meters tall and almost 6 meters long, and is considered about 70 percent complete. Some scientists oppose such private sales and believe that fossils like this should be displayed in museums.
