Students and parents at a number of schools in Azerbaijan have held protests demanding that girls wearing hijabs be allowed to attend classes. The protests were triggered by new school dress requirements adopted by the government on September 21, which do not explicitly mention the hijab. Azerbaijan's Interior Ministry reported the detention of 37 people, claiming that participants clashed with school staff and damaged property.
